How to taste wine
It's an art!


For a successful wine tasting it is necessary to follow certain steps of a precise, specific technique for the examination of the look, the aromas and flavour characteristics of the wine, so the entire process is based on three main points: the visual, olfactory and taste test.

After following these points and any evaluations made during the process, the general feeling left by the product tested is the impression on the overall picture of wine and- among other thoughts - on whether it is a representative of the particular variety and the region it comes from, on assessing its maturing potential etc.

Anglo-Saxons wine lovers, playing  with words starting with the letter “S”, refer to this process as "The six S's": Setup, Seeing, Swirling, Sniffing, Slurping, Spitting, which mean respectively: preparation of the tasting room, observation, shaking, smelling, twirling in the mouth (mouthfeel) and spitting wine.

The secrets of Wine Tasting How the professionals taste wine

Wine tasting is the acquaintance with the wine, the perception of its character using our senses. We can say that there are different levels of tasting, according to the purpose the wine has been made for. Thus, on the first level, the interest in tasting is focused on the enjoyment and pleasure we can get out of the particular wine. On this level, there are no other standards but personal taste! On another level, tasting attempts to define objective criteria for quality wine. The art of tasting could be summarized in three steps: visual examination, smell and tasting. The tasting process is not complicated but it requires immense experience and knowledge of the wine world.

This tasting is performed by professional tasters who try to describe a wine by its composition, analyzing and judging its basic properties: Appearance, aromas, flavor, emphasizing the qualities or defects of the wine. The tasters' opinions are valuable in determining the commercial value of the wine. Last but not least, through the tasting process, oenologists want to explain the organoleptic characteristics of wine; based on the entire production process, from vine to bottle.
