Monastery of Paliani
The Monastery of Paliani is located in the village of Venerato, near Heraklion, and is one of the oldest and most revered monasteries in Crete.
Dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the monastery is particularly famous for its sacred and miraculous icon of Panagia Myrtidiotissa.
According to local tradition, the icon was discovered inside the trunk of a myrtle tree. When pilgrims attempted to move the icon into a newly built church nearby, it mysteriously returned to the base of the tree several times. As a result, the tree was preserved as a holy relic.
Today, visitors can still see the sacred myrtle tree that shelters the icon, as well as the chapel built around it.

Saint Fanourios Gorge

Saint Fanourios Gorge is located between the villages of Venerato and Avgeniki.
Carved over centuries by the waters of the Apollonas River, this natural landscape features lush vegetation, impressive rock formations and tranquil scenery.
The gorge extends for approximately 500 metres and is relatively easy to access at its entrance. Further along the route, however, visitors may need to climb over rocks or cross small streams, making some sections moderately challenging.
The trail leads to the picturesque Church of Saint Fanourios, which is built beneath a massive rock formation.
Near the chapel there is an open area where visitors can rest, enjoy the view and appreciate the surrounding nature. Stone tables and benches make it an ideal location for a picnic.
Saint Fanourios is traditionally regarded as the saint who helps recover lost objects. Many visitors offer the traditional Fanouropita cake while praying for his assistance.
The feast day of Saint Fanourios is celebrated on 27 August, when local residents organize a festive celebration featuring traditional music, dancing and Cretan cuisine.
Venerato Village
